Her early artistic influences were painters Claude Monet, Richard Estes, and Robert Cottingham; photographers Alfred Stieglitz, Eduard Steichen, Clarence White, Walker Evans; documentary and photo- journalism.

After college Joanne worked as freelance photographer in the metro Detroit area - shooting many things from stock photography, editorial assignments for magazines and newspapers, and covering breaking news to creating hand-colored photo illustrations for magazine covers. Through this variety of experiences several b&w and color image series have emerged in addition to the hand-colored work, which will also be added to this web site in the future.

From 1996 to 2002 Joanne was employed as a Photo Archivist at the General Motors Media Archives, working in research and preservation with the historic archive of over 5 million images. In 1997 she received a Graduate Certificate in Archival Administration from WSU College of Library and Information Science, specializing in historic photographic and media collections.

Currently she divides her time between Detroit and Western North Carolina, searching for imagery and studying multimedia and design.  In addition to her photographic art work Joanne is also a musician, playing guitar and trumpet in bands featuring early jazz and swing.

“Domka applies colored pencils and paints to her black-and-white photos, achieving a startling effect that causes us to look at things we may have never quite seen before.” – Detroit Monthly Magazine

"While taking a class in alternative photographic processes I became interested in hand-coloring. With my background in drawing and interest in history, automobiles, and architecture -the sign series was the first to develop, followed later by the automobile series.”
